Ingeniously staged and wisely dialogued, it will have zero great complications in the living down the very ugly label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Movie Bulletin told you “The film movements on an easy pace, the newest dialogue are advanced and you will characterisations basically productive. This new film’s copywriter and you may director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess video game, to possess mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working at local casino and dated a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic software, new cast’s suavely regulated gestures from like and you will danger, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably assertive pictures (in addition to his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle an invisible vintage of your own genre.” [ ten ]

Cobb, since an authorities inspector, in addition to up the score . Even though the plot pursue a common development, the newest characterizations try fresh as well as the activities sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialog are terse and you will relevant, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney contact. Strange digital camera bases come-along occasionally so you can intensify interest and briefly arrest the attention. Strong teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing as the director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, completely new publisher and associate manufacturer, and additionally helps with rendering it a flaccid manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

It is mostly a matter of viewing Mr. Powell undergo their paces fashionably when you are a massive throw from stars and you can stars provide him customary help. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice little woman just who brings about the brand new best in your and Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you may slinky vixen which gets your into the jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy because villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does yet another ready journey given that a tired cops inspector exactly who in the long run shuts the truth. A great amount of sipping and puffing is accomplished because of the most of the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
